How to Make Fondant

This guide on how to make fondant is for a two-layer 8-inch cake. If you want to make one for larger cakes, you should increase the ingredients appropriately.

Required Tools and Materials

1 pound of marshmallows
Food coloring (optional)
Microwave-safe bowl
2 pounds of sifted confectioners’ sugar
2 tablespoons of water
1/2 cup shortening

Step 1

Use the shortening to grease the bowl. Put the marshmallows in it. Add the water. Put the bowl in the microwave for 2

and ½ minutes. If the marshmallows have not melted, put it back in the microwave for another 20 seconds then take it out. Keep repeating this until they soften. When it is soft, stir it.

Step 2

Put in the food coloring now. Make sure the color is darker than what is required, because the sugar will dilute it. You can whiten it later if needed by kneading in white fondant.

Step 3

Grease a spoon and use this to stir the sugar into the mixture. Add half a cup of sugar and stir. Keep adding half a cup until you have put in 1 1/2 cups.

Step 4

Grease your hands with the shortening. Grease the countertop too. Anyone who has learned how to make fondant knows it must be kneaded next.

Step 5

Scrape the fondant on the countertop. Knead and add sugar until the material is no longer sticky. You have to do this for at least ten minutes. If the fondant starts to stick, grease your hands.

Sometimes the fondant will dry and crack. If this happens, knead a tablespoon of shortening. Add another tablespoon until the fondant becomes elastic.

Step 6

You are done when the fondant is smooth. It is ready if no sugar clumps can be seen. Knead some more or rest the fondant overnight if there are clumps. This will help soak in the clumps.

To rest it, shape the mixture into a ball. Place some shortening on the outside. Place it in two plastic layers. Make sure the plastic is airtight before you store it.

Step 7

Put butter cream on the cake first, so the fondant will stick to it.

Using a Double Boiler

You can use a double boiler instead of a microwave. Simmer an inch of water in the pot. Place the marshmallows at the pot’s top with water. Be certain the bowl bottom is not in the water. Stir until it melts. The steam is going to melt the marshmallows without causing any burns.

Making Chocolate Fondant

Add a tablespoon of shortening to the marshmallow. Sprinkle in the cocoa powder and continue mixing. If it is dry, knead in more shortening.

You can also put it in the microwave for 20 seconds if it gets too soft. Since the fondant will be hot, use a rolling pin to knead. When it gets cool, use your hands.

Learning how to make fondant is easy, but perfecting it will take some time. But if you follow the proper procedure, you will eventually be able to master it.
